2015 GRAND MARSHAL

Mark Shorthall

Each year our nation is blessed by the service of millions who take time out of their busy lives to reach those in need. For 179 years, the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) has carried on this commendable spirit, bringing neighbors together who unselfishly give of themselves to make the world a better place.

When Mark Shortall was chosen as the 2015 Grand Marshal, he was surprised, even if no one else was. A devoted Hibernian for over ten years, he is a brother truly dedicated to “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity.” Mark brings each quality to bear in a big way. Every aspect of his generosity has strengthened a plethora of charitable organizations and their causes. His business, Buckley’s Inn Between of Hampton Bays, has been the venue for events which have brought hours of joy and raised many thousands of dollars to make good things happen which would have otherwise been impossible.

For the AOH alone, Mark has been the host of the Annual AOH Quiz Night, supplier of corned beef and Guinness, and a sponsor and active member of the Parade Committee. Each of these and more is a testament to his enthusiasm, energy, and spirit. Whether it is a contribution of time, talent, or other resources, the list is a long one, indicating a deep devotion to the community, and an admirable sense of civic pride. These are also among the reasons he was chosen as the 2013 “Irishman of the Year” for Michael Collins Division 11.

Though a native of Dublin, Ireland, we are proud he has made “Good Ground” his home. A man truly worthy to lead the 11th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, our grateful community offers him our sincerest thanks and best wishes.
