The Story Behind the Parade

The Hampton Bays St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been a cherished tradition since its first march on March 19, 2006. The parade was born from the vision of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Michael Collins Division 11 of Hampton Bays, which was founded in April of 2001 as the first AOH division on the East End of Long Island. From the very beginning, one of the group’s main goals was to create a hometown St. Patrick’s Day Parade that would honor Irish heritage and bring the community together.

The first Parade Committee included founding members Mike Quinlan Sr, Dan Heaney, Bill Hughes, John Ryan, and Jim Cantwell. Dan Heaney served proudly as the inaugural Grand Marshal, and over the years many respected community members have carried the title, including veterans, educators, and civic leaders.

Today, the parade attracts thousands of spectators each year. The streets of Hampton Bays fill with the sights and sounds of pipe bands, school marching bands, community groups, local businesses, fire departments, and creative floats. It has grown into a celebration that represents both tradition and community spirit.

The Parade Committee hosts two fundraisers each year to support the event: a commemorative parade journal and a late summer cocktail party. Thanks to the generosity of our neighbors, volunteers, and local businesses, the parade continues to thrive.

We are deeply grateful for the continued support of the Southampton Town Police Department, the Southampton Town Highway Department, the Southampton Town Parks and Recreation Department, the Southampton Town Board, and the Hampton Bays School District. Their dedication helps make this event possible each year.

The Hampton Bays St. Patrick’s Day Parade stands as a tribute to Irish heritage, local pride, and the spirit of community. We look forward to celebrating with you each March as we carry forward this special tradition.
